With this mild winter (so far) maybe chasing the green and brown fish will commence in about 2 months? Let's hope.

60 days would put us into the mid part of April which would be about average for the last five years or so. As of now much of Champlain is open as are many of the larger inland lakes. I have only been on the setbacks of the CT River in the Brattleboro/Hinsdale NH area where currently ice thickness is 6-12" which is roughly half what it was last year and the year before. That is what it is but it is hard to say what it will be. The coming and going of ice is impossible to predict, too many things influence when it comes and goes. One would think it would be an early ice out but temps, sun, clouds, fog, wind, rain and current will all play a role in when the ice is gone.
For me I am hoping for ice into early April. Want a chance to get two of the species required for the new Master Angler challenge thru the ice so I don't have to chase them open water fishing!

After being out on the ice this weekend i got the feeling open water is not too far away. The sub zero temps added nothing to ice thickness and the last 48 hours have softened up the top layer. Rivers and streams are all pumping out water creating current and warming water temps. I will be ready for an early ice out if it happens.

Heck you could find some places to launch on main lake probably. Plenty of open water. Got out on a small lake today w about 6 to 8 inches of ice. Got some smallie jig action going.
Roy... if it doesn't ice out soon... I'm gonna spend way too much on new stuff. Luckily I got a new beast browning top loader bag that holds probably too much stuff. Hopefully it fits in the bass boats haha.

I fished half way between Chipmans and b39 yesterday. Shore ice was soft and 9 inches, but once > 100 yards out it dropped to 6. When we picked up at 1 the ice in the deeper water had dropped to 4 and was very rotten. As you walked on it, it sagged a lot. For 10 feet around you, every step, the ice would sink and water would instantly cover the ice. Pretty creepy. Im done till the boats out
